The rider arrived
last season after many months of transfer negotiations, not to mention
previous attempts to sign the Finnish International. Last season things
didn’t go well for the 28 year old who saw his average drop by over two
points at one stage of the season. Things did improve a little after
moving to the number one position in the team and in the end managed a
figure of 8.66 points a meeting. Once he got used to the Coventry track
things looked much better although overall he failed to live up to his
reputation. Boss Dave Hood said: “I was really pleased to have landed the signature of Timo last season and to say I was disappointed with his form would be an understatement. Whilst he did improve mid-way through the season I still wasn’t totally convinced. On his day he beat anyone and then at other times just didn’t look interested. I have spoken to the rider and I am in no doubt that this won’t be the case this year. Timo himself was disappointed last with his performance last season and knows only too well that you can easily become a ‘has been’ in this sport and that isn’t going to happen to him. Timo has a superb racing style and has a brilliant pit crew to go with it. His bikes are very well maintained which can only be good for the Crusaders in the coming months. Timo commented: “I am delighted to be at Coventry again this season. The team have ambitions to regain the league title they had won previously and I want to help them do that. Dave runs a very professional club and it is a huge pleasure to be part of it again. I am looking forward to riding with Alvaro for a second successive season, a rider I have known for years on the European circuits and we should be able to form a powerful spearhead. My plans also include another assault on the world championship. I was disappointed how it ended last year, it was there for the taking but I had a poor GP series on the whole. I hope I can become World Champion some day to go along with a league championship winners medal which I would dearly love to win.” Timo forms part of a powerful spearhead at the Crusaders alongside Alvaro (Tatti) and new signing Rustem (Fakhrutdinov). With the extra fire power it is hoped that competition amongst the big boys will be fierce with all riders fighting for that number one slot—only time will tell if this will be the case. Team sponsors Worldwide TV have been a great help to this racer recently with the purchase of a new vehicle to help assist with his extremely busy continental commitments. |

What can be said
about this guy that hasn’t already been said. To be fair, his racing
does the talking for him—last season he raced for the B’ham City
Slickers and for the Cardiff Devils. With the closure of Cardiff he became
available to the highest bidder giving Coventry the chance to use some of
their cash to land a big name rider, something that is very hard to do
against league managers as everyone rightly wants to keep hold of their
top riders. A fee of just over £1.4 million was needed to secure his
services for the coming seasons as Rustem has signed a four year deal with
the club assuming all things go to plan. Not only did the rider average
over ten points a meeting last season he also won a lot of cash in
Individual meetings and finished sixth overall in the GP series and did
finish third in two individual rounds of the same competition. Coventry
boss Dave Hood was delighted with his purchase: “Rustem is a top line rider and there is no doubting that. I have signed top riders before only for them to fail to continue in that way so I have everything crossed that Rustem is not another one of these. He has a good history in the sport and is followed everywhere by a large number of personal fans which is obviously good for the club as a whole. He forms a powerful top three at the club this year and can hopefully propel the team to greater things. Having said that, it must surely be better than last seasons poor performance.” The ‘Russian Rocket’ flew into England yesterday and had this to

The ever popular
Italian Alvaro Tatti is the second Crusaders heat leader for season
twelve. He was brought in the season before last by the management to try
and stop the poor form of the team and it worked to some extent. Last
season he regained some form he had lost previously and at times was
unstoppable. He said: “I am happy wherever I ride, as long as the management treat me fair. When Isham closed a few seasons ago I hoped that a big club would come in for me and that happened as Springfield captured my contract. Moving to Coventry was no big hassle as the team boss is the same so things are just as professional. Last season was quite tough at times with results not going our way and I am having some bad meetings at the moment. I fully intend to get my form back this year and lead the club to some more trophies. Averaging just over eight and a half means I start on a low figure but this will be improved on this season, mark my words. Missing out on the GP series again last season also hurt so I intend to get back in there and prove my worth again on the world stage but my main priority remains with my league club Coventry.” The Italian International is now averaging less than he has ever done in this country and it remains a puzzle as to why. Prior to last season he averaged in double figures for the previous 4 campaigns and has been almost invincible but that is not the case now. Some reports say his confidence is shattered after a nasty fall at the beginning of last season but team boss Hood has high hopes for Mr Tatti: “Alvaro is your typical cool Italian racer. Nothing seems to phase him although I’ll be the first to admit his scores haven’t been great the last couple of years. It does mean however that he starts the season on a good average and hopefully he can be up there challenging Timo and Rustem for the top spot. He is a quality rider and at second heat leader he probably holds the key to our entire season, if he has a great season we could be back to where we belong - on or near the top of the table.” Alvaro has purchased six new Jawa bikes for this season and has sold off all his old equipment for a fresh start. He has been quick in the past and he is as keen as anyone to return to the glory days he had just three seasons ago and we all know that this can happen again if he remains focused on the task in hand. |

We find ourselves
asking the same question about Paul Reynolds, is this his season? Paul has
flattered to deceive recently, he started his Coventry career really well
averaging around the seven point mark in the season after he joined from
third division Boston, Since then he has seemed to freeze and even go
backwards a little, finishing last year just above the six and a half
point mark. The twenty four year old from Manchester does have talent as
he has already proved that and maybe its his equipment that lets him down
at times. He is well known for his party animal side so maybe, just maybe,
he needs to concentrate on speedway a little bit more to reap the rewards
that other riders are getting. With hard work and dedication there is no
doubt he count attain great things but is he prepared to settle down and
put more time into his speedway? Paul commented:
“I love speedway, it’s my life. But I have to do other things as well. I work hard at the track to get the right set ups for the conditions and I try as hard as anyone else to win races. I just seem to have a few bad meetings every now and then. I know I can do it, I have proved that when my scores are high but just maybe I need to do it more often. I enjoy going out with my mates and having a laugh and I see no problem with that, life is there to enjoy. The boss has had a word with me to try and calm down and put more time into the speedway preparation so I will be giving that a go this season. I am determined to do well for myself, the fans and Dave as I know he is a top bloke to work for. I also know that it is a privilege to race for such a top team and if I don’t perform I could find myself leaving the club so I will do my best to move onto the next level in the sport which I love so much.” Time is on his side at the tender age of twenty four but the years go quickly and if he wants to see his name up in lights at some point he needs to knuckle down and get on with the job in hand. He may find life tough as riding at number two isn’t easy, having to go out in the opening heat. Talking about the second string, Dave Hood said: “Paul is another smashing lad and I’m pleased to have him at the club. He is a fun character around the pits and that helps on match days but I feel he lacks in the preparation area and spends too much time at parties and drinking the night away. He needs to improve in this area or his speedway career could well end up over before he knows it. I am looking for an improvement in his scores this year and like Alvaro, he holds an important position in the team and needs to come up with the points more often than not. He has talent and this year is a vital second string as the other rider in the position is nowhere near as strong as Paul is!” |

I imagine that Mark
Sherwood will probably be the surprise signing by the Crusaders. With so
many talented youngsters already on their books, why go out and buy a
rider that is no better on paper than what the club have already? The
answer though is quite simple as Dave explains here:
“Mark is a class act and also a rider we have owned before. With quite a low team points limit (46.00) it is imperative to have good reserves that can score points from the off. Sure we have some good three pointers at Coventry but they would need time to settle in the side before scoring points for the team and I know better than anyone that it is important to start the league campaign well or it can be over before it begins. Mark has experience in the top flight and rode pretty well last season in a struggling Pitsea side. He is on an average of 3.62 and considering some of that was attained in the top five at Pitsea it looks to be a good figure. Mark is a good gater and with some better equipment under him he should make the grade and at least be a useful reserve which I guess is all I am looking for. He is now twenty seven years old and his passion for the sport is still high and if he commits himself to the task in hand then there is no reason why he can’t go on to better things. I’m looking for some solid points scoring from Mark right from the get go as he knows the track already.” Mark started his career for Coventry when he signed for them straight from school as a sixteen year old. He raced in the junior leagues before moving into the seniors at eighteen. During his time with the club he has been loaned to other clubs and done a good job before he moved to Springfield and then onto Pitsea. He averaged 4.08 for Chiseldon and also a better figure of 4.96 when he rode in the colours of Walsall. It goes without saying that Mark himself is absolutely delighted with the move: “This really is a dream come true. Coventry is the biggest club in England without doubt and I didn’t want to leave them in the first place. I understand why I was sold and now I want to regain some top form and stay here for a longer spell. Negotiations went well and the contract was signed very quickly. I have purchased some brand new machinery and also employed a full time mechanic for the first time in my career so I am as ready as I will ever be. I just can’t believe I’m back with the Crusaders.” |

Now here is a rider
for the future and hopefully for the Crusaders a rider for today as well.
Twenty four year old Mitch has been a star performer as a reserve racer
but this season he will start in the top five of the tough division one
set up. He has ultra quick machinery and a fine racing style for one so
young. He also has some top sponsors who obviously recognise the talent he
has and wanted to get on board. His father, Jim Leyland was a top rider
many years ago and Jim is always at the side of his son as mechanic,
mentor, manager and anything else he needs to be at the time. Jim had this
to say about his son:
“Mitch is a good racer. He has a neat style and is equipped with good machinery and a cool head on his shoulders. He will find life pretty tough at second string but the boss has every faith in him and it goes without saying that I share that sentiment. He is as ready as he will ever be and I am proud to be at his side.” Watching from the stands it seems that young Mitch has what it takes. He picks his moments on the bike to pass riders - he won’t just fly around the outside at the first available chance, he will bide his time and make a safe pass, something others could surely learn from in an effort to reduce injuries. That said he is not afraid to mix it with anyone and I will always remember a tussle he had with Jiri Broz in a challenge match against Birmingham. He wasn’t prepared to lose and he passed the Czech star by flying right around the boards. Coventry Crusaders boss Dave Hood had this to say about the lad: “Mitch is just brilliant. I love watching him race, it is just a pleasure. I wish him well for this coming season, I know it will be tough but I will give him time to settle in the side. At reserve he came up with some vital scores both home and away and he has to apply himself in the same way if he is to pick up points regularly in the top five. He struggled in that position at times last year although he will have a top partner in some races, none other than former World Champion Alvaro Tatti.” Things look positive for Mitch Leyland so lets hope he can turn the potential into points on the track when the tapes rise in the next few weeks. A star in the making? |

The reserve berths
as usual will be a vital position for all teams this year. Points need to
come from this area in order for the teams to win matches and in Andy
Outrum the Crusaders have a rider who has seen it all before. Andy was
another signing by the Crusaders during last season as they looked for
riders to score points. After a shaky start with the club he put in some
fine performances and just needs to work on his consistency in order to
move up to the next level. He is twenty eight years old and was born in
Stafford. He starting racing speedway for his local club but has since
ridden for many clubs including Boston, B’ham and Springfield. The
former British Champion is a great guy to have at reserve and adds that
extra experience which should be just what the doctor ordered. Andy
commented:
“I can honestly say that I thought I would be a Springfield rider for ever after signing for them over a season ago and it was a bit of a surprise when I got a ‘phone call from Dave asking if I would be interested in a move to Coventry. Well, who wouldn’t? My average had forced me onto the sidelines at Springfield but even if that hadn’t been the case I don’t think I could have turned down the chance to join the Crusaders. They are a club that is admired by everyone including teams across the world. They have a great tradition and if you perform for them, the rewards will be forthcoming. I enjoyed my time last season despite struggling with a new track and the hard racing that division one has and can’t wait for this campaign to get going. I have purchased two bikes from Alvaro (Tatti) which are like rockets and I am excited about the new season, things are looking very good and let’s hope for a super season.” Andy will probably start the season with the number seven race jacket and will be a vital force at all times but especially in heats two and eight. Hood said: “Andy is a rider with bags of experience and talent to back it up. We both know he won’t be a world beater any more but there is nothing to stop him moving up to be a second string or even heat leader for that matter. He has the speedway knowledge and a clever racing brain. I am expecting many points from him this year in a more consistent fashion than they came at times last season. He will be working with our coach, former rider Brian Henderson, to become the all round package so he can perform week in, week out. I hope it all works out for him and that he gets on well with his new reserve partner Mark Sherwood who has been purchased from Pitsea to give us a solid look at reserve for season twelve. I am quite excited about the reserve partnership who should score plenty of points between them” |

John joined the
Coventry Crusaders as part of the deal that saw John Collins move to
Stafford and was valued at £150,000 by promoter Simon Humphries. He hails
from Sheffield although has been with Stafford since signing for them as a
sixteen year old. For the first two seasons he spent his speedway life
just racing in the junior league but last season he also managed some
senior appearances. John rode in all Coventry's junior fixtures and
completed the season with an average of 10.15 whilst in the seniors he
also managed a very impressive 3.56 from five fixtures. John will start in
the juniors again this season but it goes without saying that should an
opportunity arise for a main team slot he could well find himself wearing
a Coventry Crusaders race jacket in a division one fixture. John said this
following:
“Anyone involved in speedway knows about Coventry and their fine tradition in the sport so when I got the chance to sign for them it was a dream come true. I love it here and never want to leave, I will wait for my chance to perform in the senior side.”
